SUPPORT ACTIVITIES

Judge: Broadway San Diego Theatre Awards (Jimmy Awards prelims), San Diego, California, 2023-.

This is among the most important things I’ve ever done in theatre, as my opinions and decisions can directly impact the lives and dreams of high school performers. I take judging the high school theatre students very seriously—and believe it is equally important to encourage students with true, present/close career chops while not pretending kids without the chops have what it takes. I’m honored that my lifetime of involvement in theatre is valued and that I am trusted to help create a pathway for talented young musical theatre performers to have a real chance at becoming the professionals of the future.

Usher: The Old Globe Theatre and La Jolla Playhouse, 2022-. (Photo: in my usher duds about to enjoy Ferris Bueller…er Mr. SJP…er Matthew Broderick on stage).

Working front of house is among the best ways I continually hone my skills as a writer and producer. Sure, it provides the cheapest way possible to see some fairly pricey shows at two of America’s most vaunted LORT theatres, but it also makes me an audience of the audience. I pay attention to what’s being said about the show (or the overall experience) during intermission and after the show—sometimes directly to me as an usher. Many people want to share their feelings about how a piece made them feel, why they liked it (or didn’t), etc., and I’m all-too happy to listen. Alas, in uniform we aren’t allowed to express our feelings about a show, so it’s a real exercise in listening.

Oh…and I give my time and energies to help the shows go on!

Board of Directors: Aloha Theatre, Kainaliu-Kona, Hawaii; 2017-19.

A true labor of love. Helping shepherd this quality theatre company during a period of succession planning and change in both junior and senior staff, while also paying attention to fiscal issues, productions, and the operation of a 100 year old facility…well it was a lot. And I’m honored to have been a part of it.

Season Selection Committee: Aloha Theatre, Kainaliu-Kona, Hawaii, 2016-19.

Another labor of love! To sit several times a year and discuss the pros and cons of a theatrical season is to dig into the gardens of your fellow thespians’ minds. And it showed just how much I know about theatre, both musical and plays. And it was an endless lesson in compromise and cooperation.
