Curious Modern Plays is a development-focused producing practice dedicated to new work for the stage.

Projects are built through imagination, collaboration, rewriting, and audience engagement, with development spanning both the U.S. and the U.K. Work moves from early readings and workshops toward production through partnerships with directors, actors, and producing organizations.

Curious Modern Plays

Curious Modern Plays is led by playwright and producer Randall Huskinson.

He grew up as a gay, Mormon, potato farmer. Yes, really. Two of those didn’t stick.

He has been on and around stages his entire life. It began with childhood roles and continued through school, community, and semi-professional theatre.

Favorite roles include Dan in Next to Normal, Dr. Sanderson in Harvey, Albert in The Secret Garden, and Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd.

Beyond performance, his work has included tech, front-of-house, a theatre board, a season selection committee, and producing new work for the stage—developing projects from early readings through workshop and toward production.

Theatre writing came later.

After a long freelance career as a writer and creative director across advertising, editorial, corporate communications, and journalism, he began turning toward material closer to home. The plays had always been there.

His work ranges widely. He writes adult drama, sharp-edged comedy, and plays for younger audiences involving cats, yetis, and occasionally humans.

It tends to return to the same question: what happens when people are placed inside a system and the pressure begins to reveal who they really are?

He has lived and worked internationally, including time in Taiwan and Canada, and speaks Chinese as a second language. He has owned and operated a bed and breakfast on Hawai‘i’s Big Island, played cocktail piano to help pay for college, and holds dual U.S. and Canadian citizenship.

His journalistic work has appeared in publications including the Boston Globe, San Diego Union-Tribune, South China Morning Post, Dallas Morning News, and the Vancouver Sun.
