War Bride

Overview: A contemporary drama about a mother who takes on an entrenched belief system to protect her daughter—and discovers how far that system will go to protect itself.

Set in 1990 rural Utah, War Bride examines female agency in the face of patriarchal overreach, with a clear, humane exploration of institutional silence and abuse. It is an intense, actor-driven piece with moments of wry humor, ultimately arriving at earned hope and moral clarity.

___________

Synopsis: Trudy Thompson’s seemingly stable life fractures when her young daughter reveals a devastating secret.

A British convert to Mormonism, Trudy lives as an outsider within her husband’s deeply devout family. As she begins to question what she is being told—and what others are willing to ignore—she finds herself fighting not only for her daughter, but for her own sense of truth in a community built on certainty.

___________

Context: Inspired by real events, War Bride takes on questions that remain urgently relevant: the limits of religious authority, the cost of institutional loyalty, and the ways communities protect themselves at the expense of individuals.

It also taps into a broader cultural curiosity about insular religious worlds, while remaining grounded in a character-driven story. At its core, the play is about an accidental hero: a woman who does not set out to challenge a system, but ultimately does.

___________

Development: War Bride is production-ready following extensive professional development that has reduced both artistic and financial risk.

The play received a 29-hour Equity-equivalent workshop and industry reading in Manchester, UK, largely funded by Arts Council England, along with additional readings and workshops in both the U.K. and the U.S. That process confirmed the work’s readiness for mainstage production.

The play is ready for mainstage production.
